Frequently asked questions

What is a Content Delivery Network (CDN)?

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a network of Edge servers distributed countrywide or worldwide that cache and deliver web content with the lowest latency.  It is a tool that helps to increase the performance and security of your website. The web content is served from an Edge server that is geographically closest to the user and therefore, they receive the requested content with less delay than when it is delivered from a centralized server. The CDN also secures your website against DDoS attacks through its distributed servers functioning as a protective shield against such cyberattacks.

How does a Content Delivery Network (CDN) work?

When a user requests for some content, their request is first sent to the nearest edge server through a local DNS server, which in turn delivers the requested data if it finds its cached data. If not, different kinds of security check are conducted on the request and once it is found to be secure, it is sent to the origin server. Then, the content is downloaded from the origin server and sent to the user by the edge server. Meanwhile, the edge server cashes the downloaded content for future requests and fewer requests are sent to the origin server. Therefore, content delivery is done with minimum latency and user experience is considerably improved.

What are the benefits of using a CDN?
  • Speed:
Since CDNs utilize the nearest edge servers to cash and deliver user's requested content, latency is minimized and user experience is improved.
  • Increase Security:
CDNs protect your website against certain types of cyberattacks such as DDoS attacks and SQL injection, and also reduce the risk of downtime.
  • Save money:
As data is cashed across edge servers and, therefore, the load on origin server is reduced, you need less bandwidth when you use CDN. This lowers the bandwidth costs.
  • SEO Rewards:
Among the several factors used by Google's algorithm in giving web pages higher SERP rankings is web page load speed. If you want to optimize your SERP ranking, CDN is a solution to speeding up your web page load.
  • Protection against DDoS attacks:
By using CDN, your origin IP address is hidden from the public internet and cannot be targeted by DDos attacks. Instead, DDos attacks target our infrastructure which cannot be taken down thanks to its high capacity.
  • Reliability:
CDNs also increase reliability since they do not depend on a single server or network. Rather, they use many servers worldwide and if one goes down, there are others to deliver the requests.
  • Higher availability:
Using CDN, you utilize a vast infrastructure that prevents your website from any outage and downtime caused by traffic spikes. Thus, your website is always available.
What kind of content can be delivered through a CDN?

A CDN delivers content required for loading web pages including HTML pages, javascript files, stylesheets, images, and videos.
